Situated in the South East of the country and 15kms from the South African Border. It was chosen as the Capital in the early 1960s because of the pre-existing administrative Offices , proximity to the Rail Line, proximity to South Africa and of most importance proximity to the Ngotwana river , an important source of water and the later development of the Gaborone Dam Gaborone continued to grow rapidly and peri-urban villages have been embraced in the Greater Gaborone. The city is now a commercial, administrative and financial hub of the country and one of the most successful economies in Africa.

Modern Buildings dominate the skyline and the city is now home to many five star hotels and American style Malls and many Conference Facilities.

The Main Mall which was the original business and commercial centre remains as an Office hub with shops, restaurants.
